The basic premise in Nightfall concerns an innocent man–Jim Nifhtfall by happenstance ends up with a satchel of grand. There’s even a groaner explanation in the denouement I’m a douche like the one in Psycho!
He took something they want. He’s accepting and yet still wants to live. However I can happily report that it was all worth it, David Goodis certainly seemed to have more than one very good novel in his davd. For more of the details, see Bryan’s piece.

I like how Goodis portrays Fraser as a cop who questions. An exceptional psychological thriller told from the perspectives of an innocent man accused of robbery and murder, and the sympathetic detective obsessed with finding out the truth. Amazon Restaurants Food delivery from local restaurants. See all 10 reviews. This was fairly furmulaic, guy on the run for a crime he didn’t commit, but had a nice touch of seeing the detective’s perspective in alternate chapters, and a lovely compassionate fella he is too.
More interesting is the psychological drive of the storytelling within the characterization. This all resolves, in fact, but the delicious sensation of the ambiguity lingers.
Nightfall by David Goodis
David Goodis just might be nightfzll favorite crime novelist. Again, on the one hand, it’s obvious in the story, but there is a delicacy about it that seems more distinct, even more real.

This version of the Goodis masterpiece Nightfall was sold by Black Mask publishing as The Dark Chase for reasons entirely unknown to me. Jan 03, Francis rated it liked it. The constant chasing of one kind or another that each of the characters is undertaking throughout the story really helps to keep the pages flying past and the imagined interractions between Vanning and Fraser are an interesting development of the cat and mouse theme.
But I guess, in truth, I was thinking more of certain movies where you realize the protagonist is dead Jacob’s Ladd What happens in this book could be described as missing time combined, in the end, with the kind of psychological explanation they loved in the s and 50s. Superb work; sort of a prototype for the film “North by Northwest;” Goodis has an excellent way with words, and construction, and he also an excellent sense of humor.
