The literal truthfulness of Altamirano’s claims that he had influenced the history of both the canal’s isthmus and Conrad’s novel are of course irrelevant to Vasquez’s purpose and abilities as a storyteller. Vasquez structures the book to make constant references to what Conrad was doing and where he was concurrently with what our main character was doing, but really all that is peripheral to the main story of the book.
It was inspired by the geography and history of Colombia, where Conrad spent only a few days. It tells a very basic story of the beginnings of the Panama Canal and how the split between Panama and Colombia came about.
